In July 2021, Redstockings introduced its new literary chapter, Segue: Literary Carnival 2021. It was a celebration of the transitions and an acceptance of the new.
The literary carnival was all about allowing ourselves to segue into the new season of monsoon with a new set of aspirations, challenges and transitions.
Segue was a composition of four different competitions, each with its own spirit.
The literary bonanza began with ‘Triptych Caption Writing/ Micro-fiction'. This competition had a very different aura. We asked the participants to caption the given pictures and were wonderstruck with the results. The captions held us captives with their deep literary meanings.
The first prize winning caption that induced awe was by Akansha Bhardwaj, Semester 5, English Honors, Bharati College, University of Delhi.
The next competition that was launched under ‘Segue’ was the ‘Poetry Writing Competition’; now, we all know one has its own writing style but what made this competition more fun was that the participants were asked to write a poem on the given picture prompts. It gave us a moment to be proud when we read the entries. How each participant drew stings of poetry from the prompts was indeed beautiful.
Ameesha Arora, Semester 3, B,Sc(H) Home Science, Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi, stunned us with her beautiful poem and won the first position.
The third competition to light up the bleak days of the pandemic was the ‘Thriller Writing Competition’. As the name suggests, this competition had a cup of suspense in it.
The participants had to weave a thriller story from the given pictures which acted as prompts. The stories we received were unique in more ways than one. Each story held a new unforeseen “segue”. The plot woven within the prompts were fetching. The first position in this competition was owned by Anmeet Chawla, Semester 3, B.Tech CSBS, Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Engineering, Pune.
The last competition in ‘Segue Literary Chapter' was ‘Blacked-Out Poetry Competition’; which as the name suggests is creating a poem crafted by cutting out the words from a page of a magazine, newspaper or a book. All the extra words are blackened and only those words which make up a poem are allowed to remain.
We gained a heartening response from the audience. The entries were wondrous. Each had a unique essence. As hard as it was to decide a winner, Harshita Malhotra, Semester 1, B.Com, Arya College, Ludhiana, bagged the first position.
The ‘Segue’ has been a wonderful experience for the team. We received much love, admiration and attention from the audience. It gave us immense pleasure to see ‘Segue’ become a successful chapter for us. We commit ourselves to come up with more such competitions and events in the future.
