But, But, But..Its not Real Art Bro

So “What really is art?”

No, I am not your pretentious Fakir Chand frolicking, generational Kothi

owning Marxist wannabe. I am just your friendly neighborhood indie pop thumping, occasionally tweeting layman wanting to settle this excruciatingly protracted debate of “Is AI art really art?”.

One thing however, I know for sure is that teasers are not cool, so here it is

“Yes, AI art is a real art.”.

And here is the attached explanation to push this entry to at least 500 words. With photography cameras improving in the late 1800s, lots of pointed questions began to be posed towards those who encased the world in square film mainly pointing to what the photographers really made or rather the perceived lack of anything productive. While the painters laboriously pushed human sinew and senses to their maximum in order to create (ironically) photorealistic renditions. Whilst in the process blurring a line here and there with their preconceived notions and biases. Lazy photographers, meanwhile, just showed up around a premade painting and simply captured it; both mechanically in film, and morally by not devoting due time and effort to the depiction of that particular setting.

However, now that we’ve come to the (nearly) unanimous conclusion that photography is indeed a form of art and that while differing art forms may require multifarious levels of dedication and time to master, a major component of any art piece and artist is their subject, composition and matter. So while one may capture a photo, merely by virtue of having opposable thumbs, a good photo (or photo series for that matter) possesses and requires an artist who is good not just at clicking photos, but one who can identify topical and relevant subjects to put together various elements, thus creating a cohesive narrative.

Similarly, while AI art simply involves typing prompts to a disembodied, silicon-based butler, to excel in it one too needs to possess an ability to discern great subjects and learn what to include & how to include varied objects within a piece coherently.

If anything, both AI art and cameras have reduced the entry barrier to art itself, further democratising art. And, that makes AI art a reasonable art, or at least not just another occasion to flex the fact that you know how to pencil--shade an eye.
