Art is an experience.
It is largely or wholly an emotional, creative, and imaginative outlet.
To be precise, art is a human experience.
To answer the question, ‘Does AI generated art count as real art?” you have to ponder what art is and why we indulge in it.
The necessity for art comes from the need to express.
The art that comes from experiencing the full range of human emotions cannot be compared to something that has no emotions or feelings.
The highs, the lows, the joy, the dread, the pain, the love.
These are experiences that are often uncontainable. We turn to pen and paper, colours, and canvases as proof of our “humanness” leaks from our being and leaves a mark, an undeniable impression.
Artificial intelligence is equipped to detect and mimic certain human emotions but as the name suggests it is artificial.
It lacks the need to express. From a source devoid of feelings comes art that isn’t personal and impactful.
We often use the phrase “piece of art” for people of certain exuberance or sometimes for someone simply beloved to us.
“This is so human” would be the equivalent expression upon seeing a beautiful work of art.
Who is to say what AI will be like in the coming times, but at present it isn't devoid of flaws? It is indeed erroneous.
One such flaw is that it generates responses through the recycling of already existing material.
The authenticity of art is lost yet again.
As Paul Cézanne said, “A work of art which did not begin in emotion is not art.”
