Art and Authenticity: The Human Touch in a Digital Age

Art, literary or visual, is a mode of expression and a way to convey to the world the passionate feelings, desires and emotions that we as humans come across. Art is there to enjoy, definitely, but more importantly to express. It helps convey things in a manner which connects to each recipient differently, with the different interpretations and meanings they find. The art made by humans is a representation of our emotions, the very emotions stemming from the diverse human identities, cultures and each individual's unique experiences.

Art in a way becomes a site of historiography, imbibing each piece with a different emotional landscape and history carrying the artist’s story with it to the world. And that core value of expression from art is found missing when we speak of AI generated art.

AI too in itself is an art form for the minds of technology geeks. The creation of AI has undoubtedly been a great achievement in the fields of technology and innovation and it is a great tool to assist humans in their endless endeavours and tasks. But when it comes to AI generating “art”, the said illustration or piece lacks the very essence that people relate to and translate while interpreting it.

AI can definitely do a great job at replicating human work, but those works are empty and void of the emotions carried by poets, painters and any other artist’s work. AI can generate a form of art by analyzing data and visuals and replicating it, but it cannot replicate the emotional depth, personal experiences, and cultural histories embedded in human created art. Some might rightfully argue that the creativity involved in programming and training AI to generate “art” is itself a form of artistic expression but the result, the “art” piece coming out lacks the purpose and awareness that the human mind seeks or expresses through art. It does not carry forward the intention and emotions of anyone and has no personal event or experience to draw from.

The very idea and definition of what art means and what makes it “real” may change over time but what remains central to its current meaning is expression. The prompts and instructions given by a person can be a task in itself and the depth to which the desired results are explained defines how close the “art” would be to the person’s imagination. While the work would still lack the creative tendencies and emotional roots of the human mind, it may find acceptance and be recognised in future as a credible and “real” art form which is somewhat questionable in today’s date.
