“Artificial intelligence is not a substitute for human intelligence; it is a tool to amplify human creativity and ingenuity.” FEI FEI LI.
The question of whether AI generated art qualifies as real art is a question that ignites intense debate among the general public. Whether it be in literature, creating visual art, or music, the place of the emotions can't be fulfilled by AI. The work created by AI lacks authenticity, as they are not a product of genuine human experience. For instance, a painting painted by an artist would have a quality of authenticity, whereas an abstract piece would be too perfect and would lose the human essence. Artificial intelligence is a tool if we use it like that, but instead, we’re letting it overpower us. AI generated artwork lacks empathy and raises complex copyright concerns.
Grey Rutkowski is an artist who has become well known for his highly detailed digital paintings, which have been very influential on recent AI art generators. In the last few years, systems like DALL E 2 and Stable Diffusion have become adept at mimicking Rutkowski’s signature style. Rutkowski did not directly contribute to developing these AI systems, but rather his art was scraped from the internet without his consent. This has led to discussions about copyright and using artist’s work for machine learning without permission.
Traditional art is often valued for its emotion and the human touch; it contains, whereas AI generated art lacks consciousness, emotion, and personal experience, and it cannot produce art with the same depth of meaning and emotion. The relationship between AI generated art and human emotion is quite complex. Art is deeply interwoven with human emotion and represents the artist’s emotions and experiences, whether it be a painting or music, while AI generated art merely follows the patterns and instructions that already exist in the data.
Furthermore, we see AI generated art somehow challenging traditional art concepts by evoking powerful emotional responses in humans through its work, suggesting that the essence of art lies not only in the creation but also in the interaction between the artwork and the viewer. As AI evolves, the emotional landscape of art will become more complex and diverse, impacting the emotional dimensions of art and shaping the future of creative expression.
Therefore, whether AI--generated art counts as real art or not is a thought--provoking topic, and debate on this topic today continues as AI technology is evolving and becoming more integrated into a creative process. However AI challenges traditional notions of creativity, originality, and authorship.
