Webinar


The Department of English organised a two day national webinar on 26-27 May 2020 on the topic “The Politics of Women’s Writing.” Sixty distinguished speakers from different corners of the country and some from Egypt, Pakistan and China explored female concerns and empowerment through the writing of both men and women. This international webinar was very well attended and appreciated by 500 participants.

THE POLITICS OF WOMEN’S WRITING


Day 1


26 May 2020


The webinar began with a welcome address by the College IQAC Co-ordinator, Dr. Nandini Sen and was followed by an inaugural address by Prof. Mala Shri Lal. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Karen Gabriel.The webinar opened its papers to the first panel titled 'Feminist Interjections' which was chaired by Dr. Meenakshi Bharat and included feminist interventions into the significance of #MeToo movement by Dr. Swati Moitra and Ms. Swasti Sharma vis a vis it's events and their impact on mitigating conditions that condone sexual harassment. The following session titled ‘Caste Consciousness and Resistance in Women’s Wrtings’ chaired by Dr. B Mangalam looked at issues of women's agency in terms of subjectivity, form, and writing vis a vis their caste consciousness. The session titled ‘Partition and the Female Body’ was chaired by Ms. Sana Munir, a feminist writer from Lahore. The fifth session titled ‘Imagining Women’ was chaired by Dr. Saswata Bhattacharya. Shubhaiyu Chakraborty presented a paper on, “The (Un)familiar Woman Pushing the Limits: A Study of AmrutaPatil’s Kari. Ms. Khushee Chaudhary talked about the patriarchal politics of representation in the movie ‘Bandit Queen’, while Neha Yadav analysed Amruta Patil’s Kari about illicit passion, alienation. The sixth session was titled ‘Feminist Historiography’ beginning with Dr. Soma Mukherjee’s paper ‘Women Writing in India: An Idea of Alternative Literary History’.


Day 2


27 May, 2020

The First session titled ‘Women Writing in the Subcontinent and Beyond’ was chaired by Professor Malashri Lal. The second session, titled ‘Exploring the Political Dynamics in Indian Women’s Writing’ was chaired by Dr.Nandini C Sen. The following session titled ‘Travel and Women’s Writing’ was chaired by Dr. Rekha Sapra. The next session ‘Exploring Partition Through Women’s Writing’ was chaired by Prof Mala Pandurang, Principal BMN College, Mumbai. The fifth session ‘Exploring the Political Dynamics in Indian Women’s Writing’ was chaired by Dr. Smita Banerjee, associate Professor at Delhi College and Commerce. The sixth session titled ‘Reading with Feminist Eye’ was chaired by Dr. Anubha Mukherjee Sen, Associate Professor, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, Delhi University. The seventh session titled ‘Sisterhood’, was chaired by Prof. Manpreet Kaur Kang . The eighth session titled ‘Feminising the Canon’ on the second day of the webinar was chaired by Dr. Albeena Shakil, Professor, O.P Jindal Global University, Sonepat. The last session of the two day webinar title “Domestic Spaces” was chaired by Dr. Naila Anjum, an Assistant Professor, Department of English, Bharati College,University of Delhi. The international webinar with participants from India, Pakistan, Egypt, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Wales and China came to a successful end with a vote of thanks by the Teacher-in-Charge Dr. Rakhi Jain.


DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES


Since the nationwide lockdown due to COVID-19 that forced the universities to move their teaching online, the English Department has tried to continue the learning of students through online resources available. Provided below is a brief summary of all the activities organized by the department since May 2020.


1. Prof. Rupendra Guha Majumdar deliverd an e-lecture titled “The Hero and the Artist in Romanticism” on May 6, 2020.


2. Prof. Sumanyu Satpathy delivered a talk on the topic “Fish or Fowl?: Literary Studies in the Digital Era” on July 10, 2020 via virtual platform.



3. Prof. Christel R Devadawson delivered a lecture on the topic “’English’ Romanticism and ‘Indian’ Readers” on July 16, 2020 via virtual platform.




4. Prof. Jonathan Gil Harris delivered a talk on the topic “Listening to Shakespeare” on July 24, 2020 via virtual platform.



5. Prof. Shormishtha Panja delivered a talk on the topic “Three Contemporary Shakespeare Adaptations on the Indian Screen” on July 29, 2020 via virtual platform..


6. Prof. Saikat Majumdar delivered a talk on the topic “The Invention of Creative Writing” on August 7, 2020 via virtual platform.


7. Prof. Rupin Desai delivered a talk on the topic “John Betjeman’s Poetic Credo: Modernism Modified” on August 24, 2020 via a virtual platform.

8. Prof. Harish Trivedi delivered a talk on the topic “World Literature: An Insider’s View” on August 31, 2020 via virtual platform.
