Stars in his Sphere

English Language Day, celebrated on 23rd April, aims to entertain and inform about the culture, history and achievements related to the language. The day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2010 to celebrate the English language and multilingualism. This day was chosen because it is thought to be Shakespeare’s birthday, and also the anniversary of his death. As well as being the English language’s most famous playwright, Shakespeare also had a huge impact on modern day English. His plays continue to be published, performed in theaters and seen in films almost 400 years after his death. Shakespeare has an endless list of wonderful achievements. He plays a great role in shaping literature to what it is currently. Here are a few quotes by him that the Redstockings’ team adores:

The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars / But in ourselves, that we are underlings. - Julius Caesar

Hell is empty and all the devils are here. — The Tempest

There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.— Hamlet

This above all: to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man. — Hamlet

You cannot, sir, take from me anything that I will not more willingly part withal - except my life, except my life, except my life. — Hamlet

Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind. — A Midsummer Night's Dream

Be not afraid of greatness. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them. — Twelfth Night
